Just Leave Me Be!!
Don't you hate when you're concentrating on something, so much so that you haven't said anything for the past half hour, and people feel the need to interrupt it for no apparent reason?
Now, I'm a reasonable person - if I was in the middle of some writing and someone tapped me on the shoulder and said that they'd hurt themselves or the house was on fire, then of course I'd stop what I'm doing to help them or to get the hell out of there before I'm burnt to a crisp. Even if someone just wanted to quickly ask if I'd like a coffee, I wouldn't mind that because I'd be getting something out of it, and it doesn't interrupt me too much.
But, there have been times before where I've been doing something that I was clearly concentrating hard on, and someone has suddenly felt like it would be ok to interrupt me for the sake of it.
For instance, when I was younger, there were kids in my cookery class at school who would see me weighing ingredients and then just come and ask me the most stupid questions:
"What are you doing Saraahhh?" (Yes, in that droning voice you just got in your head when you read that.)
"Umm.. Just weighing out my flour..."
"Why are you doing thaat?"
"Because cakes need the right amount of flour to rise..."
"Ohhhh. How much flour are you putting in?"
*What I say at this point* "250 grams..."
*What I think at this point* "Go and read your own flipping recipe and find out and just leave me alone!"
(I know, I should have said it, but I was too much of a scaredy cat goody two shoes for that. Such a shame.)
So, if you're going to interrupt me while I'm working, at least do it when it's something worth interrupting me for.
I mention this because I was just doing some drawing in the front room while listening to my music. It was my brother's birthday last week and his cards are still up, so I decided to draw the cartoon characters from the fronts of a couple of them. I'd already drawn a cartoon dog, which I was quite happy with, and I'd moved on to the caricature of Jeremy Clarkson which was on a different card. I was halfway through his face, and my brother came over and picked up the card and pretended to want to look at it. I say 'pretended' because he clearly didn't want to - he just did it because he knew I was using it for my drawing and he wanted to annoy me. And then, after I'd put my pencil down and sat back, he put the card back where it was, but the wrong way around so I couldn't see the front of it.
Now, I had done nothing to him. If I had stood in the way of the TV while he was trying to beat some high score or other on the X-Box, I could understand him doing that. But I was just sat there minding my own business, doing my drawing and he came and interrupted my flow for no reason other than to get on my nerves. (You might have sibling rivalry spring to your mind, but trust me. This is just him being a pure twonk.)
I was fine! I was nice and quiet, wrapped up in my own little world! I wasn't doing any harm! But he (like so many people have in other cases before) decided to interrupt it.
So a simple message - if you ever see me doing something like drawing, writing or reading and I look like I'm lost in it, please just leave me alone. Seriously, unless I haven't seen you in ages and you only have a couple of minutes for a chat, or you're offering me caffeine, or it's something else that's important, just leave me be.
Apart from if you're a member of McFly. Or Enrique. ;)
