Bananas. Stories. Randomosity.
I'm fully aware that the posts on this blog haven't exactly been consistent - I haven't set myself a schedule to know when it's time to write a new post; and the choice of subject matter has been more random than a cheerleading banana, pole dancing to a Jedward song in the middle of a rugby field full of ice cream.
Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with randomness in some contexts. Okay, a banana in a cheerleader's outfit might be going a little over the top, but in terms of a blog being written by a girl in her late teens, who has had so little inspiration for a long time and who is only just regaining some kind of order to her life, random is good.
Thanks to the months mainly spent either job hunting in the local towns or at home, job hunting online, my mind went into a kind of zombified, autopilot state, where I was doing the same thing every single day for so long that I lost my spark. But, I would get these occasional, short bursts of inspiration, which is when I'd log on to my blog and write a new post. I find that I write better when it's random than I do when I've planned it too much.
Let's see how that one goes today...
You might have noticed that a lot of the writing in my posts is a little bit descriptive (long winded, I guess you could say), and I blame that on the writer in me.
I'm not sure if I've mentioned it, but ever since I was little, I've wanted to be a writer. I've always loved writing stories, so I tend to go a bit wordy in almost anything I write - emails, Tweets, blog posts... It just seems to come naturally to me!
In AS English Language, one of the pieces of coursework I did was a piece of writing 'to entertain'. I loved it!
I wrote a story called Perfection In A Tin.
Of course I had the problem that my first draft was nearly 3000 words, and it turned out that the word limit was 1500. So I had to squeeze a lot out of it, meaning that the progression of the story was a bit too quick. And, thinking about it, I could have done a little bit better with the telling of the story in some places. But I was still really happy with it.
I entered my original 3000 word draft for the Winning Words competition the school was running and was shortlisted as the winner from the sixth form entries, so I'm glad I didn't just scrap it completely!
I have got a story-in-progress at the moment, with the working title Hypnotised, which is basically about two best friends who fall in love with the same guy. It's still in it's very early stages though, and I haven't worked on it in months. But I'm hoping to get back on track with it soon, especially as I'm starting my job at the library this Saturday, so I'll be in the outside world a bit more!
Anyway, the reason I'm mentioning all of this is because I've been thinking about using this blog space to post any short stories I write, and maybe even extracts from the draft of Hypnotised while I'm working on it, just in case anyone would want to read them. I'll see how it goes, and might end up making a separate space for them, if I write enough of them!
I had made a Tumblr account, fully intending to post them on there, but me and Tumblr don't mix well...
So I think I'll post the original draft of Perfection In A Tin soon, as a tester to see how it goes.
Apologies that this is a bit of a short and dull post, by the way. It was a spur of the moment idea, so I wanted to get it out there before I forgot.
But I'm on the look out for inspiration for another long-winded rant, so hopefully the next post will be at least a little more entertaining than this one is.
Watch this space!
